Duffy sounds a bit like Amy Winehouse. Can't say I'm hugely impressed.
If I was going to choose someone to listen to that sounded a bit like Amy Winehouse, I'd probably pick Adele.
She has a new album out called nineteen, which she pronounces nine-een, because she's from a council estate. _________________ "The cranes look in good order by Paddington Station - there's a helicopter there too. I've just seen a picture of Duffy, and I'm 99% sure I met her on a train from Warrington to North Wales once a few years ago!
I remember as she said she was a Warrington campus student (which I now believe she was) and was Welsh (which I know she is) and well she looked the same.
I recall as she had a big box of air with a toy helicopter in it to represent a helicopter ride she'd bought her boyfriend.
Then she started banging on about moving to Rockferry all the time - blah blah blah. And I emparted all my knowledge about breaking into the singles chart of course. Well the first half is true anyway. _________________ Wax On / Wax Off @ Citybar (Resident)

nice story woj...
I think the duffy/adele backlash starts here, don't get me wrong i quite like duffy's most recent single and it's appreciably better than most rubbish in the charts, but it's a retro tune, sounds just like all kinds of 60s motown stuff that has been done before, i've only heard one adele tune that's been flogged to death on radio 1 & 6 music, and it's shit, i don't know what all the fuss is about.
I'd go for Alice Russell, Nicole Willis or Sharon Jones, who, like Winehouse, (who is undoubtedly an excellent modern soul singer), make music that's retro, but is also forward looking, and i would argue have better voices and make more interesting music than adele or the duffer...
those are my views, for what little they're worth _________________ Saturday 6th September

I have to agree partially with the Kushmeister, Alice Russell et all beat the crap out of a lot of the "chart" sheeite thats about at the moment. But I would say listen to some more of Duffy before formulating opinions, its not all rooted in the past.
I personally am a fan of Duffy, have been following her career with interest, and am all for supporting local talent. Have got me tickets to see her, and very much looking forward to it. I think she's got a mighty sound and her performance on Jools the other week was one of the finest i've ever seen.
The problem with real good music, is that it quite often gets picked up, and then played on this thing called the radio. The further problem is then that starts a snowball and then everybody is on the bandwagon. We'd all like to think of artists as our own, or the first to find or hear them (or as a DJ, play them out) or get annoyed when they become too popular or get too much airplay (imagine how Steve Lamacq feels).
Adele on the other hand is just a fat, minging, knacker who nearly-won some moronic tv show and should be put down.
Anybody for... The Foals, Whitest Boy Alive, MGMT, Vampire Weekend, Los Campasions, Operator Please, The Ting Tings?
Oooh, an actual discussion about music! _________________ 3DJ MySpace / 3DJ Facebook / Re:Align:Design / LinkedIn

I like the latest single and have just a copy on 7". I maybe biased by the fact I met her (get me!) but I like the sound of her voice and am never too bothered if it sounds retro as I like that sound.
Is it better for an artist to adapt an old style well than trying to define a new sound badly? Discuss........ _________________ Wax On / Wax Off @ Citybar (Resident)

Interesting points, duffy does have a fine soul voice to be fair & i'm all for supporting local talent, so thumbs up in that regard, i've not listened to any of her other stuff to say whether it is pure retro all the way, so i'll give it a go alright...
As to woj's point, i don't think there's anything wrong with adapting old style music, i'd be a screaming hypocrite djing at a night call "funkdub" & a huge fan of Pama International & Quantic saying otherwise, however the best exponents don't just facsimile the past they do something new with it,...
Finally 3dj's wee list, Foals (thumbs up on what i've heard thus far), The Whitest Boy Alive (big thumbs up, fans of Kings Of Convenience, Peter Bjorn & John will enjoy), MGMT i like so far (heard one today very arcade fire), ting tings may be quite good, but may equally descend into shouty rubbish, i've not heard anything by the others on that list... _________________ Saturday 6th September

This Winehouse / Duffy/ Adele thing.
I'm sure there are loads of women with tremedous voices around. That's nothing new. This big focus on them is partly due to the Ronson explosion, but there is also a more fundamental factor.
People are starting (finally) to get sick of over-produced tinny pop nonsense. What all of these ladies, and many others, have in common is their backing bands.
Quality, dedicated musicians, playing proper instruments and everything. Not just on tour, but for the radio-friendly 4 minute slot. It seems to be all backwards: where it should be easier to get a guitarist, drummer, horn section etc for a decent singer, it seems that these young things get thrown into a studio with a european producer with a shit beard and a copy of pro-tools and bingo! there's a hit record.
This resurcence in the motown sound is more fundamentally a resurgence in 'real' music. Which can only be applauded.
And don't go on about how this is nothing new, if you get nothing but TMF and Radio 1, female singers don't sound like this.
As it happens, the first time I heard Duffy was on Later... or Johnny Ross or something, where she sang live with a live band. I later heard the actual released single, which sounds much worse than a proper double bass popping along. _________________ If the history of science shows us anything, it is that we get nowhere by labelling our ignorance 'God'. |

I quite like Duffy's voice. And Winehouse's voice for that matter. They're both great singers. They just sing songs that move me so very little that I couldn't give less of a fuck if I tried |
